Preliminary phytochemical evaluation of stem and leaves extract of Abutilon indicum in petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanol and chloroform-watershowed the presence of carbohydrates, glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, tannins and phenols. All the extracts were evaluated for their in-vitro anticancer activity against cancer cell line (HT 29 adenocarcinoma) by MTT assay, in-vitro antitubercular activity against M. tuberculosis H37Rv by microplate almar blue dye method and in-vitro antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria S. aureus, E feacali and Gram negative bacteria E. coli, Klebsiella by serial dilution method. The result showed that chloroform-water extract of stem and leaf exhibited good anticancer activity. Most of the plant extracts of Abutilon indicum were found to be active against Mycobacterium tuberculae and bacterial strains used in the study. Thus, the results of present work support the traditional use of Abutilon indicum and can be further explored for their potential therapeutic use.
